Doug Lillydahl
18th Season
dlillydahl@d125.org
Doug Lillydahl is in his second stint as head boys swimming and diving coach. Lillydahl led the program for eight seasons (1996-97 through 2003-04), then returned to the helm in 2015-16. His overall dual-meet record is 111-16. SHS has won state championships in nine events during his tenure.
During his time at Stevenson, Lillydahl has guided the Patriots to nine top-10 finishes at the IHSA state finals, including third place in 2023, runner up showings in 2003 and 2004 and the only team championship in school history in 2022. His teams have captured ten North Suburban Conference championships and nine IHSA sectional titles.
Lillydahl led the Patriots from the 1996-97 season through 2003-04, when he left the school to teach in Germany. During his eight seasons, Stevenson won three sectional championships and three North Suburban Conference titles, in 2000, 2001 and 2004. SHS also captured Lake County Invitational crowns in 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2004. Lillydahl’s teams had a record of 42-13 in dual meets -- including a 38-5 mark in his last six years -- and went undefeated in three seasons.
After teaching in Germany for two years, Lillydahl returned to Illinois, taking the reins of Mundelein High School’s English Department for six years. He took over as Stevenson’s Director of Communication Arts in 2014. He returned to the helm for the start of the 2015-16 campaign.
Lillydahl was a three-time state champion for Whitefish Bay (Wis.) High School from 1983-86, and still holds four school records. He was inducted into the Whitefish Bay High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2016. After high school, Lillydahl went on to earn All-America honors at Stanford University, winning one individual Pac 10 championship and five relay titles, and was part of the Cardinal’s 1987 NCAA championship team. He was the Pac 10 champion in the 100-meter butterfly in 1990. He finished 22nd in the 100-meter butterfly at the 1988 Olympic Trials.
In addition to his coaching duties, Lillydahl is the director of Stevenson’s Communication Arts Division. He also is the program coordinator for Raising a Reader Lake County.
