Jeff Wimer is the winningest coach in IHSA state girls water polo history, with a career record of 769-173-2 through the 2023 season. He has led Stevenson to five state championships (2015, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2023). His SHS record through 23 seasons is 598-151-2.
Wimer was hired as head coach in 1998 and led the program through the 2004 season. After a three-year hiatus, he returned in 2008 and has led the Patriots since. In 23 seasons, Wimer’s teams won 14 sectional titles, three third-place state trophies and three second-place awards. He was inducted into the inaugural class of the Stevenson Athletics Hall of Fame in October 2019.
Wimer began his coaching career at Mundelein High School, starting its girls water polo program in 1990. He led the Mustangs to state tournament appearances in seven consecutive seasons (1990-97), winning state championships in 1994, 1995 and 1997. Also finished second in 1996.
In high school, Wimer played on three state championship boys water polo teams at Fenwick High School (1973, 1974, 1976). He was named a high school All-American in 1974, 1975 and 1976, and was selected as Illinois Player of the Year in 1976.
In college, Wimer played for the University of Illinois-Chicago, helping the Flames win Midwest Collegiate Championships in 1977, 1978 and 1979. He earned All-American honors in 1978 and 1979.
Wimer was Inducted into the Illinois Swimming Association Water Polo Hall of Fame in 2000, and the Lake County High Schools Sports Hall of Fame in 2007 and the Stevenson Hall of Fame in 2019.
