Grant Johnson

Grant Johnson won two IHSA state championships during his first four years as head coach, in 2017 and 2018, and added a runner-up finish in 2019. His first team, in 2016, tied for 13th. His teams have captured four sectional titles.

During Johnson’s first four seasons, the Patriots have recorded a dual-meet record of 72-1-2. Stevenson has three perfect seasons during his four-year tenure: 20-0 in 2019, 17-0 in 2018, and 22-0 in 2016. SHS entered the 2020 season with a 43-match winning streak.

In addition to two team state championships in four years, Johnson also has guided Stevenson to two individual singles titles and two doubles crowns. Esther Shi won the state singles championship in 2017 and 2018, and Emily Hu and Jenny Yang captured the doubles titles in 2018 and 2019.

Johnson was assistant coach under Mike Fitzgerald from 2002-15. During that time, the Patriots won one state championship (2012) and had five other top-10 finishes. Stevenson won eight sectional titles while he was an assistant.

Johnson also served as an assistant girls tennis coach for nine years, and as an assistant girls basketball coach for one season.
