6th Season
pchavez@d125.org
PepeJon Chavez was named head boys soccer coach on Dec. 12, 2019. He replaced Mark Schartner, who retired in November after 34 seasons at the helm.
Chavez, who also is the school’s head girls soccer coach, served as an assistant in the boys program from 2010 until his promotion. Before joining the Stevenson coaching staff in 2010, Chavez led the women’s and men’s soccer programs at Bethel University in St. Paul, Minn., for three seasons. He spent 10 years as a coach at the NCAA Division III school after playing for there for two seasons.
Chavez guided the Bethel women’s team to a 28-20-6 record in three seasons from 2007-09, while the men were 19-33-2 during the same time. As a player for the Royals in 2001 and 2002, Chavez had two of the most prolific seasons in school history. He was named the most valuable player of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 2002, the first Bethel men’s soccer player to earn the honor. He was a two-time all-MIAC selection and finished his two-year career as the fifth-leading scorer in school history with 20 goals and 15 assists.
He moved to the Chicago area in 2010 and joined Stevenson’s soccer program as a volunteer coach.
Chavez has owned and operated his own soccer academy for nearly 16 years, and has developed a number of collegiate and professional soccer players. He also has served as a staff instructor in the Olympic Development Program of the Illinois Youth Soccer Association.
About the Program
About the Program
Overview
Mission
To educate the student-athlete both as an individual and a member of the team, program, and community through the implementation of a blend of US Youth Soccer and International coaching methodologies. Developing a winning culture in which results are balanced between the field, classroom, and life.
Program Vision & Action Plan
The health of a successful program begins with a student athlete’s desire to represent their school and become a living example of Stevenson Boys Soccer. To display Composure, Confidence and Commitment to the Community both on and off the field, in order to attract community support and have future Patriots dream of representing Stevenson Boys Soccer when they grow up.
Community is the foundation of our program and our ability to stay connected with community programs and clubs will allow us to sustain a competitive program.
Confidence that we are a program that focuses on competitive development at all levels of play will attract players from DA and Select clubs that disallow High School participation.
Composure and balance in both the mental & physical sides of development are crucial in order to shift the mindset about who we are as a competitive program in IHSA and our community.
Commitment from all players/families, including local clubs at all levels to the competitive developmental vision of the program to establish itself as an exemplary High School Boys Soccer Program.
Competitive Developmental Process
- Systems of play will be discussed for each level with tactical modifications based on opponents & personnel (looking to mirror the Varsity)
- Attacking style of play with emphasis on organized possession & effective build-up play
- Fast-paced with a balance of technical & physical play
- Defensively organized lines working together as a unit with their keeper
Coaching Curriculum & Lesson Plans
Stevenson will follow the structure of the US Youth Soccer Program using the Player Positioning Number System for Roles & Responsibilities. A year-round approach focused on periodization to have our players peaking at the proper time during the season. Training curriculums will be developed to paint a picture of the game with a balanced work-to-rest ratio in training & matches.
Team Levels
Freshman A & B Teams
The coach will design training sessions for players with a major focus on speed of play and the use of technical skills and tactical ideas. Players will be expected to use their first touch to gain an advantage over defenders. Coaches will be very enthusiastic, yet firm with the players in order to maintain a structured environment. Coaches will use their knowledge of the game and the Stevenson Soccer Player Development Program (separate doc)to help the players become successful as they move through the programs.
JV 2 & 3 Teams
Coaches will design training sessions for players with a full focus on the mental and physical development of skills obtained, including team shape and balance. Players will be expected to be masters of the ball and continue to develop their movement off the ball and overall knowledge of the game in order to become complete players. Sessions will be run with game-like intensity to develop players for game-like pressure situations.
JV1 & Varsity Teams
Coaches will design training sessions for players with a 100% focus on match play. Free play will be encouraged in a controlled environment where players have accountability to their coaches, themselves, and each other. To continue and develop player’s technical skills and increase their speed of play through match-like play. Players will spend major time maintaining shape and balance on the field. Offensive and defensive match conditional play will be the focus of each session!
The Stevenson Soccer Player Development Program will be structured to suit each team’s needs specifically! Coaches will go the extra mile to ensure quality, consistency, and, most of all, integrity in teaching at all levels, developing players as people, not just soccer players.
Coaches will teach COMPOSURE, CONFIDENCE, and, COMMITMENT—the keys to becoming a great soccer player in the Stevenson COMMUNITY!
